SIAMESE COLOURPOINT CATS

Siamese Colourpoint Cats living with us at Fir Tree Kennels, Manchester

Hi,
My name is Amanda. I live with my family at Fir Tree Kennels and Cattery in Manchester. My passion and my dear friends are my Siamese Colourpoint cats, hence them being here with us at Fir Tree.

When you are choosing to have a cat as a pet, a Siamese has to be the best choice you will ever make. They are intelligent, cheeky, fun and loving as well as witty and more than capable of getting their point across - whatever their point is at the time - SERIOUSLY!! Once you have lived with a Siamese, there's just no going back to any other companion.

Presently, I have three shorthair Siamese Colourpoints; Scarlet Lilly, Sweet Madeline (we call her Maddy at home) and their male partner in crime Harry.

Harry, in his favourite place - his bed!

Lilly. Dearly loved and always missed.Earlier this year I lost my best friend, Lilly, suddenly and unexpectedly. I was devastated. Lilly left me with her legacy, her only two kittens, my beautiful chocolate-point girls Scarlet and Maddy. They have helped sooth my grief to some extent. Only a person that has had the fortune to share their life with one of these wonderful creatures can know how important you become to them and they to you!

I am a firm believer in giving my cats and kittens lots of 'hands-on' attention from a very early age, which helps to socialise the cats and creates a more affectionate nature. Any kittens that we have are born in my home, where the mother can feel secure and be cared for throughout her pregnancy and whilst whelping her litter. These beautiful cats are attractive, adorable kittens, but I believe their personality is also important to any pet owner, and so we like them to be socialised with people from the earliest possible time. Our vet sees my kittens soon after their birth (one of the advantages of running a boarding kennels is that we have an excellent relationship with our vet). By the age of eight weeks, they have undergone a full medical examination and commenced their innoculations.

About the Siamese Colourpoint

The Siamese cat has a longer, slender body, an angular wedge-shaped face with almond eyes that slant towards the nose. This body type is the same across the colourpoint, shorthair and Oriental breeds - which differ from the Siamese only in colouring and marking. The fur is soft, glossy and very short, lying close to the body. Accepted colourpoints for the Siamese include lilac, blue, seal and chocolate, with some other variants being acceptable in the colourpoint short hair. A medium sized slender cat with long tapering lines, very lithe but muscular. Males may be proportionately larger than females.

The Colourpoint's Temperament

Siamese are affectionate and intelligent cats, renowned for their social nature. They enjoy being with people and are sometimes described as "extroverts". They are extremely vocal, with a loud, low-pitched voice - known as "Meezer", from which they get one of their nicknames - that has been compared to the cries of a human baby, and persistent in demanding attention. They also have a great need for human companionship. Often they bond strongly to a single person. These cats are typically active and playful, even as adults.

The social orientation of Siamese cats may be related to their lessened ability to live independent of humans. Siamese coat colouration is appealing to humans, but is ineffective for camouflage purposes. They are less active at night than most cats, possibly because their blue eyes lack a tapetum lucidum, a structure which amplifies dim light in the eyes of other cats. Like blue-eyed white cats, they may also have reduced hearing ability. Therefore, being dependent on humans may have been a survival trait for ancestors of the Siamese.

History of The Siamese Colourpoint

Siamese cats (in Thai, wichien-maat) have existed for centuries in Thailand (formerly Siam). The pointed cat known in the West as "Siamese" is one of several breeds of cats from Siam described and illustrated in manuscripts called "Tamra Maew" (Cat Poems), estimated to have been written in the 1700s.

In the 1950s - 1960s, as the Siamese was increasing in popularity, many breeders and cat show judges began to favour the more slender look and as a result of generations of selective breeding, created increasingly long, fine-boned, narrow-headed cats; eventually the modern show Siamese was bred to be extremely elongated, with thin, tubular bodies, long, slender legs, a whip-thin tail and long, narrow, wedge-shaped heads topped by extremely large, wide-set ears. The major cat organisations altered language and/or interpretation of their official breed standards to favour this newer streamlined type of Siamese.

Colourpoint Shorthair - a Siamese-type cat registered by CFA (USA body) with pointed coat colours aside from the traditional CFA Siamese coat colours; originally developed by crosses with other shorthair cats. Considered to be part of the Siamese breed in all other cat associations, but considered a separate breed in CFA. Variations can include Lynx Points and Tortie Points.  In the UK we have the CFA's equivalent in the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy).
